Got Kids?

There are loads of lifestyle design websites out there, and plenty of LD gurus. Unfortunately, most of them are single twenty-somethings with no kids. If you’re a parent who is considering spending a considerable amount of time abroad with your family, you need advice from someone who has:

1) lived abroad with kids of all ages
2) created a virtual or other work situation that ensures enough income to support a family
3) made sure that their kids got a great global education that is recognized in the US
4) successfully ushered their kids into and through college after educating them in nontraditional ways

That’s us. Tom and I have done the transnational dance–without corporate or diplomatic perks, thank you– with four daughters. All four graduated from college in the US or Canada at 19 with no debt (and without spending a fortune). We know the ropes, and we know what most lifestyle designers don’t: how to actually make it work with a growing family, a not-always-growing income, and skyrocketing college costs. As entrepreneurs, we understand the challenges of living abroad and have learned how to keep our business healthy and the family happy. Try doing that anywhere with an economic meltdown and four teenage daughters! We aced it, and we can help you do the same.

My book, The New Global Student: Skip the SAT, Save Thousands on Tuition, and Get a Truly International Education, was published by Random House/Crown in May. It got some great buzz (including a cover blurb from Dan Pink, author of the best-selling A Whole New Mind) and some wonderful reviews (The Boston Globe called it “funny, innovative and meaningful–a how-to guide with heart”). It’s currently in its fourth printing. You can learn more about the book here.

Tom and I work with families interested in giving their kids the gift of international living. We help parents figure out how to blend the best educational options available in order to ensure that their kids are learning like crazy and preparing for their most thrilling and fulfilling opportunities. We call it Smart Education Design, and it gives families the power to create the best educational experiences imaginable for their kids.

If you’re considering a sabbatical or a move abroad with kids of any age, I invite you to read the book and visit this blog regularly for valuable information.
