Kitchen Chemistry for Middle Schoolers–and Other Student-Designed Innovations

I love stories about student innovators. The more we read and distribute ideas about how young people are coming up with creative concepts, the more likely we are to inspire other students to do the same.

So, I especially enjoyed this article in The New York Times on 23 student innovations.

Personal favorite: the piece on Kitchen Science Investigators, a project designed by Christina Gardner and Tamara Clegg, both 28, who are researching cognition and learning environments as they work toward computer-science doctorates at Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing.

They’re blending cooking and chemistry in an effort to get kids excited about how science shows up in everyday life.

We need a lot more ideas like this. Giving college/grad students the incentive to design creative interactive classroom projects for kids is a great way to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. The key is keeping the projects relevant and the kids engaged.
